Computing Jobs Still on the Up!

Up to 10,000 people flocked to a jobs fair last weekend to meet potential employers.  A record number of jobseekers visited the Career Zoo event in Dublin's Mansion House in the hope of finding work.  More than 2,500 vacancies wer up for grabs at the two day jobs event, with firms such as Amazon, AOL, McAfee, PayPal, Twitter and Abbott.  it marked the first time that Twitter participated in a careers event here.  the social networking site was on the lookout for recruits for its European headququarters in Dublin. A spokesman said 'We are looking to hire about 20 people in our Dublin office.  We have just finished our graduate programme and we are mainly looking for software developers'.

Cloud Computing Jobs have €9.5bn Silver Lining

The Government have announced plans to create thousands of jobs in the high-tech cloud computing sector and bring an estimated €9.5billion into the economy.

 The €5million jobs initiative is part of a Government bid to create thousands of jobs across all its departments.  Its main thrust, however, will be a move by the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and innovation to make Ireland a global cloud computing centre of excellence.

The Government will be concentrating ‘significant investment’ in the new technology area in the coming years with the development of a €5million national cloud computing research centre to be announced.  Consultants say the centre could help deliver 8,600 jobs in the cloud computing sector in just two years. The strategy is one of the central thrusts of the Government’s Jobs Action Plan that will be launched.

Transition Year Students Experience a Great Buzz with Computing Life in DCU

The School of Computing in conjunction with CNGL have been running a hugely successful computing programme ‘ComputeTY’ for Transition Year Students in DCU. The programme is now in it’s seventh year and since it’s launch in 2005 has taken in almost 3,000 students to date. The course was redesigned two years ago to incorporate a stream in Java Computer Programming as well as the main stream of Website Design. In the web design stream, students have the opportunity to plan a theme, layout and design for a website. They learn the basics of HTML to build their web pages and advanced to more complicated technologies such as CSS and Javascript to add extra style. Once the students have the structure of their website in place they take on the task of designing web banners and animated GIFs using graphic design tools like GIMP. One of the reported highlights of the week for the students was shooting, processing and embedding their very own videos for their sites, some of which turned out very professional indeed.
